Coffee Hound. Yum.

Looking for a sweet pick-me-up before you spend an epic day on the slopes? Head over to Coffee Hound in the South Ridge Lodge for delicious coffee, the best hot chocolate in the state, and donuts. Sweet, sweet donuts.

I caught up with Jen Litteral, who co-owns Coffee Hound with her husband Chris Keegan, to find out what makes Coffee Hound’s food and drinks so darn delicious. The answer was quickly made obvious: Jen and Chris love what they do. Even their vacations are centered around coffee; they travel the globe in search of the best beans, the best roasters, and the best answers to her questions about the industry. Did you know that coffee beans are actually the pits of a very sweet type of cherry that have to be handpicked because they ripen at different times? Or that over 5 million people work in the coffee industry and coffee is the second-most traded commodity in the world after oil? Or that the Pope baptized coffee in the 1640s because he enjoyed it and up until that point it was unsanctioned by the Catholic Church and considered “the Devil’s drink”? I learned more in five minutes of conversation with Jen than I ever had about coffee. She was clearly excited to share her passion. I was clearly excited to eat her donuts.

Ah, yes. The donuts. Nicknamed “The Babysitter,” Coffee Hound’s Mini Donuts are the stuff of legends. I had mine sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and striped with maple cream. Their deliciousness was only matched by my Gourmet Hot Chocolate: dark chocolate sauce and steamed milk topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. It’s true: I had a moment of panic when I was ordering (I realized I literally couldn’t choose between all of the delicious drinks on the menu) but I went with chocolate and I was not disappointed.

Coffee Hound isn’t just a donuts and drinks joint, though—they offer fresh lobster rolls (Bar Harbor style), “Kate’s Bars,” shortbread biscotti, chocolate-covered coffee beans, and oatmeal. Basically, they’ve got you covered for a long, awesome, delicious day on the slopes.

Coffee Hound has been in the South Ridge Lodge for two seasons now; their flagship store runs from May to October in Bar Harbor, Maine and they spend their winters with us. They also just opened a food truck outside of Sport Thoma on Route 2 in Bethel that offers breakfast food and their famous coffee, cocoa, and donuts. Their South Ridge Lodge hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30AM to 3:30PM and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00AM to 4:30PM. To find out more, go to
