Local Flavors

Though Maine’s most beautiful mountain village is home to a variety of boutique shops, delicious restaurants, and plenty of history, there’s no denying that Bethel holds on to certain rurality that’s typical of Western Maine. And besides the picturesque beauty of farms along the roadways, it also means that local, fresh produce and goods are available all over the place.

Edible Bethel
Thanks to a dedicated community of gardeners, the Edible Bethel project promotes healthy living through fresh produce grown in public spaces around town. This means that you can stroll down the streets to find colorful fruits and vegetables in the ground and in planters and you’re able to pick and eat whatever you’d like for free. Each crop has a specific theme, such as salsa at the Bethel Chamber of Commerce and spicy Italian at the law offices of Siegel & Crockett.

Bethel Farmers’ Market
Operating every Saturday from May 27 through October 14 from 9AM to 1PM, the Bethel Farmers’ Market touts mixed vegetables, fruits and berries, baked goods, local meats, baked goods, and prepared foods, as well as fiber products and handmade soaps. You’ll find these farmers and artisans selling their wares on 1 Parkway Rd.

Greenwood Farmers’ Market
A short drive from Bethel, the neighboring town of Greenwood hosts its Farmers’ Market every other Friday from 4-6PM at the Town Hall.

Beyond these regularly scheduled markets, the Maine Food Atlas is a helpful resource if you’re looking for local products other days of the week. Many farms in the area set up shop along the roadside to sell their produce in the summer and fall, and there are also pick-your-own farms for strawberries, blueberries, apples, and more as these fruits come into season. You’ll find local eggs, cheese, and milk at both the Good Food Store in Bethel and the Local Hub in Greenwood too.

Happy harvesting!
