We’re hearty as heck here in New England, no doubt about it. We’re always ready to charge no matter the conditions, but sometimes Mother Nature just gets too frisky. Nature is unpredictable to say the least, so who knows when you’ll need a backup plan during your ski vacation. When the wind picks up, the temperatures plummet or you’re seeing the sheen of blue ice on the slopes, here is our go to list of what to do off the slopes when you just can’t get out there, no matter your stoke level.
Mountain food should be its own category; greasy, delicious and oh so filling. But maybe you’re looking for someplace different to chow down. Head to the Sunday River Brewing Company to get locally brewed beer and fresh donuts (we’re partial to the blueberry filled). If you’re looking for something for protein packed, get to the Good Food Store and hit up Smokin’ Good Barbecue. This local secret serves 16-hour smoked meat on weekends and whenever you see smoke on weekdays, and served out of a red trailer, you can’t go wrong. Oh, and calories don’t count on weekends.
Consider this your official excuse to stay in top physical condition by getting a full body Sweedish or deep tissue massage to get those limbs limber and ready to pound moguls at the Jordan Spa. Hot stones? You got it. Maybe the winter weather is taking a toll on your skin? Try a moisturizing body wrap or get a facial. Need to get those nails in shape? The Jordan Spa can do everything from manicures, to pedicures and gel and paraffin treatments. Even if you haven’t been skiing, you are worth it. Sit back and relax, and remember that you are #flawless.
The Big Screen
Just by Main Street Bethel the Gem Theater is actually a hidden gem. Not only does this movie theater/ gallery show awesome films and classic flicks, it’s worth visiting just for the popcorn. Sit down for a show, order a brew (or three) and dive into a bag of organic popcorn made with Himalayan salt and coconut oil. If you’re looking for more flavor, you can throw a variety of Gneiss Spices onto your popcorn with flavors like dill pickle, buffalo, smokey mac-n-cheese or Maine maple. Come for the popcorn, stay for the movie.
All Day Après
On days when you just don’t know if the wind will let up, stay near the slopes so you can check those life statuses ASAP. Post up on the deck of the Foggy Goggle with any of the rotating craft beers on draft and a plate of their famous nachos or head over to Sliders and dive into a fish bowl filled with Tito’s and Bloody Mary mix. The Mountain Room is also a great option on weekends to get top-notch noshes and inventive cocktails (there’s even one with Moxie). If it’s not too cold, snag an Adirondack chair near the fire and if you’re not looking to booze, get a caffeine buzz from any of the Coffee Hound’s
It’s not just about downhill skiing here, folks. If the temps are good, Bethel is has over 75 miles worth of trails open to snowshoeing and cross country skiing. If you’re looking for something a bit more of a bucket list adventure, try out dog sledding with the Mahoosuc Guide Service.
